The RVA has been operating for almost 70 years and in December 2002 formed an alliance with the Bus & Coach Association in Wellington. The BCA deals with similar regulatory and policy issues and also has a good working relationship with the Land Transport Safety Authority, Tourism New Zealand and the Ministry of Transport. The Association seeks to inform regulators of issues affecting its members and negotiate amelioration as necessary. Many RVA members are also BCA members. Each organisation maintain their identity and governance and BCA staff also look after RVA interests. Policy and management of the Association is conducted by a Council elected at the Annual Conference. Any member may stand for Council. A national franchise with 500 vehicles or more is automatically entitled to one seat on Council. The President is appointed annually by the incoming Council. The day-to-day administration and financial affairs of the Association are managed by a Wellington-based Chief Executive Officer. Sectors within the Association include Passenger Cars, Light and Heavy Commercial, Campervans, Vehicle Leasing and Motorcycles.
